Invitation from the President

Hans KnapeDear colleagues.

Although many of you have other matters to think about and to handle right at this moment it gives me great pleasure to draw your attention now, to the next Euroanaesthesia meeting to be organised in Milan, 6 – 9 June 2009.
On behalf of the ESA Board and Council I would like to invite you to join us in this great Italian city. This fifth annual meeting of the European Society of Anaesthesiology will be characterised as a typical example of the evolution of the Society, following the growing successes of the Euroanaesthesia meetings of Vienna, Madrid, Munich and Copenhagen.
One of the key elements of the evolution is the ever increasing involvement of the members of the ESA in all activities. The ESA board identified the urgency of greater participation of the members of ESA for ESA matters. Therefore the ESA board has decided that the ESA Council, the ESA members representing body, will meet not once, but twice a year from 2008 on, to mobilise new ideas and new ambitions for the society to better serve the Society’s goals and to provide more benefits for its members.
The ESA exists for, and depends upon its membership, and our annual Euroanaesthesia congress is one of the main opportunities for us all to meet and work together.

Of course the Scientific Programme Committee, guided by its chairperson, Professor Jennifer Hunter is the key for success of the Euroanaesthesia meeting. The contents of the programme have grown again and the scientific programme has expanded once more by the installation of a new scientific subcommittee “Perioperative care for the Elderly”. The Scientific Programme Committee has invited internationally renowned clinical and scientific experts in the field of Anaesthesiology, but also experts with areas of expertise which Anaesthesiology shares with other medical and related specialties. This reflects the vision of ESA, that closer communication and cooperation with scientific societies, which have expertise in specific medical areas of interest, will be of mutual benefit, and will finally, benefit our patients. Education in Anaesthesiology will also have a prominent place in the next Euroanaesthesia meeting due to a great demand for improvement and efficiency in medical training throughout Europe. The importance of basic sciences, clinical research and education will be reflected in state of the art key note lectures, refresher courses, symposia and workshops.
The industrial exhibitors will present the newest developments, which will help us clinicians to further improve quality and safety in patient care. The ESA Board is extremely happy to invite the ESA industrial partners, and the world’s leading medical and pharmaceutical companies to fully participate. Exchange of experiences and ideas between anaesthesiologists and industry is the single key factor for further progress in medical care.
The ESA organisation also would like to stimulate personal contacts between attending visitors and speakers to bring forward your own knowledge and experience. The meeting will meet its goals, if you as an expert and visitor will have the opportunity to discuss your questions with colleagues, and if you will be able to enlarge your network of personal contacts. This holds especially true for the young clinicians and researchers from all over Europe and beyond, to compete in the scientific and clinical activities of the European and global world of Anaesthesiology.

Milan will host Euroanaesthesia 2009.This great Italian city evokes all kind of pleasant associations, which hopefully will come true during Euroanaesthesia 2009. Design, fashion, shopping, architecture, music and art all come to mind when thinking of Milan. The famous Italian cuisine will spoil you with its elegance and creativity. Shopaholics are bound to visit the unforgettable Via Montenapoleone, which offers the whole scala from fancy boutiques of the high priests of “la moda italiana” to authentic 19th century tearooms and delicatessen shops. Mentioning the world “scala” as I just did, immediately points to the famous “Teatro alla Scala” where the most recent restoration of 2004 has resulted in the appearance of the original theatre, having given birth to the first performances of Verdi’s Otello, Puccini’s Turandot and Bellini’s Norma, but now up to date with the original perfect acoustics. And don’t forget Il Duomo, the impressive largest gothic cathedral in the world, but for Rome’s Saint Peter cathedral, which was built in the 14th century to provide access to 40.000 people.

The ESA board is extremely grateful for the support of the Societa Italiana di Anestesia Analgesia Rianimazione e Terapia Intensiva and also in particular for the collaboration of the national organising committee chaired by Dr Flavia Petrini in the preparation of Euroanaesthesia 2009.

It will be a great pleasure for me to be able to welcome you all in Milan for Euroanaesthesia 2009. Considering the progress which is made today and considering the current activities and enthusiasm of the ESA secretariat to organise the Euroanaesthesia 2009 meeting I am fully confident that next year’s meeting will be outstanding. Use this opportunity to further develop your knowledge, your skills, and your understanding of clinical practice, research and education in perioperative anaesthesiology care, in critical care medicine, in emergency medicine, in pain medicine, and in reanimation. These are the areas of expertise which characterises the proud specialty of Anaesthesiology. Come to Milan for this purpose, but also to join the many socio-cultural highlights which Milan and Italy have to offer.

Prof. Hans Knape,
President ESA
