Applications are sought for the following:

  • Project grants of up to 60,000 euro each, to support work of up to two years duration.
  • Research support grants for amounts up to 15,000 euro to assist work in progress or pilot studies.

There will be selected under the 2009 programme:

  • Three grants of up to €15,000 each
  • Four grants of up to €60,000 each (exceptionally, for 2009 programme only)

Applications are invited for the following fields:

  1. Clinical research
  2. Experimental research
  3. Patient safety

These grants will be awarded to start on or after January 1st 2008.

The areas of priority and the number and size of the grants may change from year to year.

Grant application must be received no later than September 5, 2008. Late applications will not be accepted. Projects can be for up to 2 years. The total sum requested must not exceed the grant amounts on offer. Funds may not be used for indirect costs (overheads) or for travel. New applicants should seek guidance from those experienced in experimental design and preparation of grant applications. Please follow the Guidelines for Grant Application carefully.

Grant applications for the following January will be assessed by the ESA Research Grant Committee in the preceding autumn. The names of the successful applicants will be approved at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the ESA at the end of that year and then posted on the ESA’s website. The winners will receive the Award’s certification during the following Annual Meeting of the ESA and will be provided with free registration to the meeting.

Starting from Euroanaesthesia 2009 in Milan, a 90 min session will be held at which ESA grant winners (grants up to 60,000 euros) from 3 years earlier will be asked in a 20 min talk (plus questions) to present their research findings. The winners of the 2009 Research Grant Programme (grants up to 60,000 euros) will be asked to present their findings at Euroanaesthesia 2012.

The grant recipients (grants up to 60,000 euros) should submit a short scientific and financial report every year (using the “Research Grant - Interim Report Form) by January 31st and the final report (using the ‘Research Grant - Final Report Form’) within a period of 3 years from the inception of the grant.

The grant recipients (grants up to 15,000 euros) should submit the final report (using the ‘Research Grant - Final Report Form') within a period of 2 years from the inception of the grant.

All resulting publications and presentations should acknowledge the support of the Research Grant Programme of the European Society of Anaesthesiology.
