SmartTots Task Force
In the recent years some evidence has emerged that anaesthetics might have a neurotoxic effect on the developing brain of small children as well as already in utero, in particular if anaesthesia is applied repetitively.
This is certainly a serious and also very challenging question for research, which can only be approach by a large collaborative effort.
Our "sister society", the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) has therefore initiated in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other stakeholders a project on "Strategies for Mitigating Anesthesia-Related neuroToxicity in Tots (SmartTots)" SmartTots will be a multi-year, multi-phased collaborative effort to address major scientific and clinical gaps regarding the safe use of anesthetics and sedatives in children.
