Highlights from the Congress

Euroanaesthesia 2008 opened up its doors on Saturday 31 May in Copenhagen, Denmark, to greet more than 5000 delegates from all around the world.

A packed programme with the latest research presented at symposia, workshops, and abstract presentations held the delegates attention for four days in spite of the beautiful weather outside the congress centre.

The ESA President Prof. Johannes Knape welcomed all delegates to Euroanaesthesia 2008 at the Opening Ceremony and then passed the word to the host country Chairman Dr. Hans Kirkegaard who spoke about the importance of using humour when dealing with difficult situations. The invited keynote speaker, Jesper Fisker, Director of the Danish National Board of Health, conveyed how anaesthesiologists are perceived; focusing on the fact that the anaesthesiologist is the only medical practitioner that is there from birth until death. The Opening Ceremony ended with a spectacular show from the Peter Schaufuss Ballet.

At the trade exhibition more than 100 companies exhibited their latest products in the field of anaesthesiology. The European Society of Anaesthesiology was present with its new ESA stand encompassing the National Societies Village. 16 different societies had signed up to take part in the Village, informing delegates about the activities in their country. At the ESA stand it was also possible to take the EDA diagnostic test: Many took the opportunity to test their knowledge in anaesthesia, asking questions to the examiners who were there to help candidates prepare for the exams. The best result during the congress was as high as 84%!
