The National Museum

Nationalmuseum From cabins without chimneys to refined drawing-rooms with painted ceilings in Rococo-style – the National Museum gives you a taste of Finnish life from prehistoric days until modern times.

The National Museum of Finland was established in 1893 and the present building was constructed in the years 1905-1910. It represents fashionable museum architecture of the turn of the century, in which the different parts of the building reflect the nature of the collections and also the stages of historical architecture. With its granite façade and steatite ornaments, the museum building is one of the main works of national-romantic architecture in Finland.
The National Museum, which was opened to the public in 1916, underwent extensive renovations in 1997-2000 when all its exhibitions were renewed.
