Eligibility

Research areas

Applications are invited for the following priority areas:

    1. Clinical research
    2. Experimental research
    3. Patient safety

Types of Grants

The types of ESA Research Grants include:

  • Project grants of up to 60,000 euros each, to support work of up to two years duration. At least one grant should be awarded to a patient oriented study.
  • Research support grants for amounts up to 15,000 euros to assist work in progress or pilot studies.

Priority will be given to clinical (or related) topics and those investigators who do not have alternative sources of funding. However, the areas of priority and the number and size of the grants may change from year to year.

Membership

The applicant must be an ESA member in good standing. In general, awards are made to an academic institution or hospital, not to individuals or to departments. Any qualified member of a sponsoring institution in one of the European countries that is represented on the ESA Council or from which the National Society is a Society Member of the ESA, in good standing, may apply. At least one of the investigators should be an ESA member.
Thus an individual person writes the grant and then the institution will benefit. The grant must be used only for the specific application. The head of the department has to confirm in writing that the relevant resources of the department will be at disposal of the applicant. In justified cases the grant might be transferred to another institution, if the principle investigator changes his position to another institution. Transferral of the grant requires approval by the Research Committee.

Work performance location

The work has to be performed in one of the countries represented by the ESA Council. However, the applicant may be non European, but must be an ESA member. Collaborative studies among different European countries may be supported.  In these circumstances, it is necessary to receive approval letters from all the institutions participating in the study.
