Part I Examination (MCQ)
The Part I examination is held annually in late September or early October simultaneously in several centres. The examination may be taken in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese or Turkish. Other languages may be added in the future.
The Part I examination comprises two multiple choice question (MCQ) papers, one covering basic science and the other clinical anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.
Candidates applying for the Part I examination in a country where the Part I examination is mandatory and who are registered in the national medical register of that country are entitled to a reduced Part I application fee. The official national bodies in charge of organising the Part I examination in these countries and the ESA can confirm this fee to eligible candidates, who should apply for their Part I examination through their National Society and not directly to the ESA.
| Candidates meeting these criteria and registering for the Berne centre should therefore apply from the SSAR-SGAR website. |
| Candidates applying for the Budapest centre will not follow these regulations and will have to send their applications directly to the ESA and not to the Hungarian Society of Anaesthesiology. |
Successful candidates who were entitled to a reduced Part I application fee and who wish to apply for the Part II must make sure that they pay the “Part I Upgrade Fee” if they wish to become eligible for the Part II examination.
Important announcement - Change to the marking system of the EDA written Examinations
The Examination Committee of the ESA has decided to change the marking system for both the EDA Part I and ITA examinations with effect from the 2008 examination.
Negative marking will no longer be used in the examination. Candidates will be required to answer all the questions in both Paper A and Paper B. They will be awarded a mark for each correct answer. There will be no penalty for an incorrect answer or any left blank. It is in the interest of candidates to ensure they answer all the questions.
More information can be found in the Diploma Guide and the Part I instructions that you can download from this page. We also invite you to read this article written by Zeev Goldik, Chairman of the Examinations Committee, and published in the May 2008 issue of the European Journal of Anaesthesiology.

Cancellation – Refund – Postponement
For various organisational reasons, any refund or postponement of your Part I examination will not be possible after the application deadline. Any cancellation received after the application deadline will be at the candidate’s expense. This is why we recommend you carefully check your private obligations before sending your application form. If however you cannot attend your examination for any reason, please inform the ESA Secretariat as early as possible so that we can take all appropriate actions for the smooth running of the examination. |
